The Ombudsman met with the civil society representatives
On April 14, a meeting of Human Rights Ombudsman and Artsakh civil society representatives was held in Shushi during which Ruben Melikyan presented the results of his working visits to Europe and USA in 2017, as well as the main provisions of the HRD 2016 annual report.
In the course of the meeting, a number of ideas and ways for their implementation aimed at strengthening Artsakh civil society structures and increasing the effectiveness of their activity were discussed. The Ombudsman underscored the importance of the active role of NGOs in making Artsakh more recognizable. In their turn, the civil society representatives raised questions of their interest, including the consequences of taxation of financial means provided by the private sector, issues of cooperation with foreign partners. During the exchange of views on HRD annual report, the civil society representatives underlined the need to activate work in Artsakh regions, as well as in closed institutions.
In conclusion, the Ombudsman assured that the views expressed will be further considered in the work and that the tradition of open dialogue with the civil society will continue.A press conference of Artsakh Human Rights Ombudsman followed the meeting with the civil society.
Post Boxes were placed at Shushi penitentiary institution
On the initiative of the Human Rights Ombudsman Ruben Melikyan, post boxes were placed in all three regimes of the penitentiary institution for gathering the applications directly addressed to the Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman is on a working visit in the United States
Since March 8, Human Rights Ombudsman Ruben Melikyan is on a working visit in the United States of America organized by the Hay Dat Office of the US West Coast. R.Melikyan has had 33 events in New York, Boston, Providence, and Washington, including seven public speeches at the academic community and in various circles of Diaspora.
Human Rights Ombudsman’s Staff to operate a hotlineOn February 20, 2017, the day of the new constitution of Artsakh, a 2017 hotline will be operated by the Human Rights Ombudsman’s stafffor the purpose of rapid response to the applications relating the right to participate in the referendum, as well as free exercise of professional activity by mass media.
The Ombudsman had a number of visits in Brussels
On February 16, Human Rights Ombudsman Ruben Melikyan was in Brussels within the framework of his visit to Europe. He had meetings with the representatives of human rights community, parliamentarians, as well as civil society representatives.
The Ombudsman visited Strasbourg and had a press conference in the European Parliament
On February 14, Human Rights Ombudsman Ruben Melikyan, on the invitation of the European branch of the Armenian General Benevolent Union, had a working visit in Strasbourg.He had meetings with the representatives of human rights community, as well as the parliamentarians.

Please accept my cordial congratulations on Your being elected the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia.
I am sure that Your office will promote the future increase of the level of the RA human rights protection, and I wish You fruitful results in this important and responsible work.
Expressing my readiness to cooperate I hope that we will manage with joint efforts the development of the cooperation established during the last 3 years between the Ombudsman Institutions of two Armenian countries.
NKR Human Rights Defender
On February 2, 2011, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh convened a press conference summarizing the results of activities of the year of 2010. The Defender presented the statistics of the staff admitted appeals during the year of 2010 according to their regions and plots. It was noted that in the year of 2010 about 243 people applied to the NKR Human Rights Defender, and violated rights of 36 people were restored. The NKR Human Rights Defender Yuri Hayrapetyan, indicated that in the mentioned period problems raised by the inhabitants mainly concerned the activities of judicial authorities, social security and safety issues, legal work relationships, clarifications on housing legislation and insurance of housing and utility services.
On December 10, 2010 in Transdniestrian State University named after T. G. Shevchenko took place a scientific-practical conference on “Development of Human Rights Institution in self-determined states” dedicated to the Human Rights International Day.
The participants of the conference discussed the issues concerning the activity of Human Rights and Freedom Institution, the present situation, prospects for development and improvement of their protection mechanisms in self-determined states.
At the conference the NKR Human Rights Defender Yuri Hayrapetyan spoke on “The history of the establishment and the development of the Ombudsman Institution and the influence of non-state recognized NKR factor on some fields of its activity.”
On December 10, 2010 the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh signed the partnership agreement between the Human Rights Defenders of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and the Transdniestrian Moldovan Republics. According to it the ombudsmen signed an additional agreement and the protocol of the partnership agreement.
